Chairman's Message to Our Policyholders

Brotherhood Mutual is a different kind of insurance company. For years, we’ve said that we intend to be a consistent insurer—one that’s able to partner with churches and ministries, regardless of market conditions. This was certainly the year to prove it.

Market turmoil challenged most businesses in 2008, including ours. Still, we experienced steady gains in our business operations. Most importantly, and despite market conditions, we kept our promises to our customers, paying out considerably more policyholder claims than last year. And, from what many
of you have told us, we did it with near 100 percent satisfaction.

As a policyholder, you can feel absolutely secure with Brotherhood Mutual’s 2008 financial performance. I’m very pleased with our results and have never been more optimistic about the future of the company. I believe we proved that Brotherhood Mutual can be your ministry partner in any market condition.

In addition to financial performance, we’re equally interested in how well we support your ministry needs. Our perspective as an insurer is somewhat unique, often personal. Most managers and employees in our corporate offices—and our independent agencies, too—are involved in the ministries of their churches. So you can easily understand why we consider our business much like a ministry—one that exists to protect yours and those you serve.

We are constantly seeking new, innovative ways to address the property protection, liability, and other risk man agement issues that have become commonplace in ministry today. Our goal is to minimize your concerns and help you work more effectively.

One of the ways we’re doing that is through ChurchSafety.com, a new risk management Web site we developed and launched with Christianity Today International. The Web site is a free service available to Brotherhood Mutual policyholders through their agents. It opens a new door to the latest research and best practices from safety experts and safe ministries across the country.

We continued to expand our MinistryFirst property-casualty product in 2008 by offering policyholders a variety of coverages and introducing several broadened product options. We’re currently developing new ways to address more of the unique, and essential, needs of customers.

Brotherhood Mutual entered California and Minnesota this year, and we plan to expand into New England in 2009. Geographic expansion not only adds opportunities to serve more churches and ministries, but we also expect it to increase our financial strength and policyholder security.

As the future unfolds, I can assure you that Brotherhood Mutual is in an excellent position to meet your ministry needs and face the challenges of the current financial market. In most ways, our success as a business reflects your success as a ministry. Thank you for letting us share in your ministry in 2008. We value your trust, and look forward to serving you for many years to come.
