Kathleen Turpin, vice president–human resources at Brotherhood Mutual, is one of 14 business and community leaders appointed to a team studying ways to address public health challenges in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Fort Wayne is home to Brotherhood Mutual and one of 13 communities selected to participate in this federally funded program. The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne is coordinating the local effort.
One Year, One Health Change is the Fort Wayne theme for the 18-month program. Like other communities in the study, Turpin says Fort Wayne was selected because of the health and fitness-oriented activities that community organizations have promoted and sponsored in the past.
Brotherhood Mutual employees participated in these community efforts and will be involved in similar programs throughout 2007. The company has a fitness center at its headquarters facility and recently installed a 1/2-mile walking path for employee use. Fitness and other healthcare activities are part of the company’s medical benefits program.
