Choosing Experience and Vision
“Mark is exactly the right leader for Brotherhood Mutual,” said James Blum, retiring Brotherhood Mutual President and Chairman of the Brotherhood Mutual board of directors.
“His vision for the company complements the efforts that Brotherhood Mutual is making in defining its position in the industry. Mark’s strong management experience will help shape Brotherhood Mutual as we face increasing competitive challenges and regulatory restrictions. Most importantly for anyone taking on the role of president at Brotherhood Mutual, Mark is a natural fit with the Biblical and customer-focused values that define the company.”
“I have been impressed with Mark’s business acumen,” Blum continued. “Mark has played an integral part in developing the business that has provided our greatest successes of the last 10 years. He is an accomplished strategist who understands the importance of product positioning, pricing, and customer service in driving profitability and gaining market share. I speak for the board of directors in saying that we are all excited about Mark leading Brotherhood Mutual in the years ahead. We feel extremely fortunate to have someone of his character leading our management team.”

“Jim has been a steady leader for Brotherhood Mutual,” said incoming president Mark Robison. “ He cares deeply about our people and our company. Through his efforts the company has built an excellent reputation in the industry and in the church market.
“I’m very excited to be able to follow Jim as president,” Robison said. “He’s built a solid foundation for the success we’ll experience in the next 3–5 years.”
Blum joined Brotherhood Mutual in 1967 as a statistician in the accounting department. He was promoted twice before being advanced to vice president–operations and treasurer in 1983. In 1990, he was promoted to senior vice president and became Brotherhood Mutual’s chief executive in January 1995, only the fourth since the company’s founding in 1917. Blum was elected chairman of the company’s board of directors in 2000.
During Blum’s tenure as the company’s president, Brotherhood Mutual has grown to a national company, recognized as a profit leader among property and casualty insurers. Blum’s commitment to long-range planning has helped strengthen the company and solidify its position as a primary insurer of churches and related ministries.
In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Blum has been active in a number of professional, industry, and community organizations. He served as chairman of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies in 2000–2001. He currently serves on the board of trustees of the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission Ministries and the board of trustees at Taylor University.
