FAQs
Our Mission is Protecting Yours ®
Read through these frequently asked questions to learn how Passport to Ministry® can protect your next trip.
Q: Is insurance coverage available for both short-term mission trips and long-term travel?
A: Yes. Passport to Ministry is designed to let you choose
the coverage that best protects you, your church’s employees, and
volunteer travelers. For long-term mission operations (more than 120 days),
please contact us.
Q: Can a mission agency or a denominational mission board purchase a Passport to Ministry policy to insure all of its short-term mission trips?
A: Yes. We can customize a plan to meet your organization's needs.
Q: I'm planning to take a mission trip overseas. Can I purchase a Passport to Ministry policy as an individual?
A: Yes. Both Options 2 and 3* are designed for individual travelers. To see a comparison of all Passport to Ministry coverage options, visit our Coverage Comparison page.
If you're planning to travel with a group or as an employee or volunteer of a church or mission organization, you should look into obtaining Option 1* coverage through the organization.
Q: Does Passport to Ministry provide medical benefits even if I have my own medical plan?
A: Yes. Sometimes major medical policies do cover overseas travels, and other times they don’t. Regardless, Passport to Ministry will pick up anything your major medical doesn’t cover up to the limit you elected. This includes co-pays, deductibles, and denied coverages.
Q: Does Passport to Ministry provide medical benefits to cover an employee or volunteer mission worker who is injured overseas?
A: Passport to Ministry Option 1* includes medical coverage for both employees and volunteers:
Employees: are protected by our "voluntary compensation coverage" for covered expenses resulting from occupational injuries or illnesses that occur while the employee is involved in occupational duties in a foreign country. Benefit schedules are determined based on the employee's state of hire. They typically include medical expenses, disability, rehabilitation, and death benefits. This voluntary compensation coverage is a contingent coverage and does not apply if benefits are paid or owned by an employer or an insurer under state workers' compensation law.
Volunteers: are protected against medical expenses resulting from an accident or travel-related sickness during a foreign religious operation. Coverage limits of $50,000 or $100,000 are available. While there's no deductible for accident-related medical expenses, a $250 deductible applies to sickness-related medical expenses.
This medical benefit for volunteers is coordinated with, and pays after, any primary medical coverage. Each person must rely on his or her own major-medical insurance for reimbursement for primary coverage. Our Passport to Ministry coverage will apply to treatment provided in either foreign territory or the United States, provided that the injury or illness arises out of the insured's foreign religious operations.
Q: Are services offered for evacuation of mission workers during a political or medical emergency in a foreign country?
A: Passport to Ministry offers evacuation services for both political and medical emergencies in foreign countries.
Political instability or civil unrest: Under Passport to Ministry Option 1*, our foreign travel security provider will arrange evacuation for travelers whose personal security is threatened by any political instability or civil unrest. If evacuation isn't reasonably possible, the security provider will try to maintain regular contact with the travelers until the threat is abated or evacuation becomes reasonably possible. The travel costs associated with a political evacuation are paid by the traveler.
Medical emergencies: The following benefits are available through all three Passport to Ministry options*: If a medical emergency arises and if our foreign travel assistance provider determines that no adequate medical facility is locally accessible, we will arrange and pay for an emergency evacuation, under medical supervision if necessary, to the nearest location with adequate medical facilities. If it's determined that repatriation to a facility in the United States is medically necessary, we'll arrange and pay for repatriation under medical supervision. If reasonably possible, we'll make arrangements and pay the cost of one family member or other traveling companion to accompany the injured person during repatriation.
