Q: Do concealed carry laws apply to our school ministry?

A: Look into local gun laws before hiring armed security guards to protect your school. Laws regarding concealed carry and firearms policy notification vary from state to state:

  • Some states prohibit weapons on premise unless special permission is granted.
  • Some states allow weapons on premise unless specifically prohibited.
  • Many states prohibit concealed carry of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school unless the individual is an active law enforcement officer.
  • Concealed carry laws may also vary by state when it comes to law enforcement officials, whether on or off duty.

Generally, even if concealed carry is allowed in your state, you can still choose to prohibit firearms on your property. Work with your school administrators to determine whether circumstances exist that warrant an armed security team at your school and then work with a local attorney to make sure all applicable laws are observed.
