Q. Should registered sex offenders be allowed at church?
5 min read
A. You should proceed carefully if faced with this situation.
While the desire to minister to this individual is valid, you must give primary consideration to the protection of all members, especially children.
Here are some ways to prepare for this situation before it arises:
Research local laws regarding sex offenders.
Understand the type of sex offense committed by the sex offender.
Adopt strategies to manage the situation.
Restrict contact with children and their activities and programs. Have a policy requiring criminal background checks for nursery, children’s, and youth ministry volunteers and staff, and prohibit anyone with a history of sex offenses from interacting with minors.
You should consult legal counsel before working with sex offenders. Your attorney can help you understand privacy issues and legal requirements in your state.
