About this Checklist

Most likely, your buildings were designed for camp activities, education, and storage—and not to prevent abusers secretive access to children, youth, and vulnerable adults. Gather a map of your property and floorplans or make a quick sketch. Go building to building and room to room to identify areas where privacy is unnecessary. This checklist covers the following questions:

  1. Are unused rooms, closets, and outdoor structures kept locked with limited key access? Be sure to evaluate a garage, kitchen, changing areas, stairwells, shed, athletic areas, and stage areas.

  2. Are camp vehicles kept locked at all times, with limited key access?

  3. Do you have wide-angle security mirrors installed to view areas with limited visibility?

  4. Do all rooms (except for bathrooms) have windows?

  5. Have you removed curtains, blinds, or screens that block the view of all areas accessed by campers?

  6. Have you limited privacy in a nurse’s station area?

  7. Are all angles of your outdoor activity areas open and easily visible to all?

  8. Can you closely monitor sleeping quarters?

  9. Do you restrict access to all buildings not open to campers?

  10. Do you use and monitor security cameras for all entrances?
