Brotherhood Mutual Promotes Five to
Assistant VP and Vice President Roles

FORT WAYNE, IND., February 19, 2019: Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company has promoted two employees to assistant vice president and three employees to vice president, effective immediately. Learn about each officer, below.

Brad Bertsch

Brad Bertsch, CPA, CPCU, AIAF, has been promoted to assistant vice president of finance. He previously served as assistant controller.

Bertsch joined Brotherhood Mutual in February 2010. Prior to that, he worked for Lincoln Financial Group in Fort Wayne. Bertsch graduated from Indiana University Fort Wayne with an accounting degree and earned an MBA from Indiana Tech in 2009. He became a certified public accountant (CPA) in 2009 and obtained the chartered property casualty underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2015. Bertsch serves on the boards of Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and the Indiana chapter of the Insurance Accounting & Systems Association. He’s an actively involved member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Bluffton, Indiana.

Dustin Grogg

Dustin Grogg, CPCU, ARM, ARe, has been promoted to assistant vice president of underwriting. He previously served as director of underwriting, product quality and development.

Before coming to Brotherhood Mutual in 2016, he held leadership roles in both sales and underwriting for Protective Insurance Company in Carmel, Indiana. Grogg is a graduate of Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in management with concentrations in finance and marketing. He earned the chartered property casualty underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2014 and also holds the associate in risk management (ARM) and associate in reinsurance (ARe) designations. Grogg and his family attend Emmanuel Community Church in Fort Wayne.

Jennifer Hansen

Jennifer Hansen, CPA, MBA, CPCU, has been promoted to vice president of finance. She previously served as assistant vice president of finance and controller.

Moving up through the ranks since joining Brotherhood Mutual in 1996, some of Hansen’s past roles include controller, manager of accounting, and senior financial analyst. Hansen is a graduate of Indiana University, where she earned both an MBA and a bachelor’s degree in accounting. In 2004, she also earned a chartered property casualty underwriter (CPCU) designation. She attends Covenant United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne, where she is involved in care ministries.

Steven R. Smith

Steven R. Smith, MBA, CPCU, ARM, ARe, has been promoted from assistant vice president to vice president of underwriting. He previously served as assistant vice president of underwriting.

Smith joined Brotherhood Mutual as a regional underwriting manager in 2009. After serving in several regions, he was promoted to senior regional manager. Smith graduated from the University of Cincinnati and earned his MBA from Taylor University in 2015. He serves on the board of Questa Education Foundation and has served on the board of Youth for Christ of Northwest Ohio. He has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana, teaching risk management and insurance. Smith attends Central Church in Fort Wayne.

Josh Spencer

Josh Spencer, ACAS, ASA, MAAA, CERA, CPCU, has been promoted to chief actuary and vice president of research and development. He previously served as assistant vice president & chief actuary.

He joined Brotherhood Mutual in 2014 and held the position of senior actuary. Spencer holds a degree in actuarial science, finance, and insurance from Ball State University. He earned his Associateship in the Society of Actuaries and his certification as a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst in 2013. In 2014, he earned his Associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society and in 2016 he completed his CPCU designation. He currently serves on the Ball State Actuarial Science Advisory Board.

He also serves on the board of NeighborLink, a nonprofit focused on neighbor-to-neighbor expressions of God‘s love. He and his family attend Pine Hills City Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where they lead a small group and are active in several ministries.
