Protecting New Jersey Policyholders During the COVID-19 Crisis

The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance is directing all licensed property and casualty insurance carriers to provide policyholders who may be experiencing a financial hardship due to COVID-19 an opportunity for a 90-day grace period to pay insurance premiums so that insurance policies are not cancelled for nonpayment of premium during this challenging time.

An affected policyholder who is experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic may elect that this 90-day emergency grace period begin on either April 1, 2020, or on May 1, 2020.

During this extended grace period, Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company will not cancel any insurance policy for nonpayment. In addition, Brotherhood Mutual will:

  • Waive late payment fees otherwise due, and not report late payments to credit rating agencies, during the 90-day period.
  • Allow premiums due but not paid during the 90-day period to be paid over the remainder of the current policy term or up to 12 months, whichever is longer. These payments may be made in up to 12 equal installments.
  • Ensure that late payments during the 90-day period are not considered in any future premium calculations at any time.

This grace period will be applied to applicable renewal installment payments, if you (the policyholder) provide notice to Brotherhood Mutual that you wish to continue coverage.

The extended grace period is provided for the policyholder to repay the premium due, without penalty or interest. It is not intended to change the terms of the issued policy or be considered a forgiveness of the premium.

If you are an affected policyholder and would like to have this grace period applied to your policy, please contact us at 1-800-380-5474.
