Prepare for a Roadside Emergency

From local youth group outings to national mission trips, you trust your ministry vehicle to safely transport you and your passengers from point A to point B.

Routine inspections and maintenance will help prevent many roadside emergencies, but unforeseen issues and accidents are always a possibility. Prepare your vehicle for such an occurrence by stocking it with any supplies you might need in an emergency.

Stock Your Vehicle 

Keep the following on hand at all times:

Cell Phone. A working cell phone is an essential piece of equipment. Keep a universal car charger handy so your phone will work when you need it.

First-Aid Kit. Your first-aid kit should contain items that can handle everything from minor cuts to major bandaging. Make sure all contents are not expired.

Food and Water. Pack enough food and water to provide at least one meal for you and your passengers. You’ll need more supplies if traveling in remote areas or very hot or cold conditions.

Warning Devices. Supplies that boost visibility are helpful at any time, but are especially important at night. Include the following in your preparedness kit:

• Reflective triangles
• Flares
• Battery-powered warning lights

Roadside Maintenance Supplies

Tires go flat and car batteries die. Include the following in your vehicle to deal with roadside maintenance emergencies:

• Jumper cables
• Jack and inflated spare tire
• Spare fuses
• Flashlight with spare batteries
• Basic tools

Winter Supplies

In the winter, you will want to equip your vehicle with a few additional supplies, including:

• Sturdy windshield scraper
• Hat and gloves
• Blankets
• Small shovel 
• Road salt or kitty litter to help with traction

Having emergency contact information at your fingertips allows you to alert church leaders and parents quickly, whether you need to request assistance or just relieve parent’s fears.
